In 2011 CM Punk held a promo that went down in WWE history as the “Pipe Bomb” promo. CM Punk interfered in a tables match between John Cena and R-Truth. He slammed John Cena trough a table and so helped R-Truth to win the match. After R-Truth celebrated his victory, CM Punk got himself a microphone and went to the entrance stage and sat down.
He started talking about leaving WWE after Money In The Bank 2011 with the WWE Championship which he will win from John Cena. In this “Pipe Bomb” promo CM Punk attacked not only John Cena verbally, he also attacked COO Triple H, CEO Vince McMahon, Hulk Hogan, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and more. It was pretty clear that this promo wasn’t scripted.
CM Punk went off script and told everyone very emotionally and very clearly what he thought about WWE. He also mentioned other Wrestling promotions like ROH and NJPW. The “Pipe Bomb” went down in history like one of the greatest ever held promos!
How did CM Punk’s career change due to the “Pipe Bomb” promo?
After CM Punk held this speech, he was getting more attention than ever before!
Sports channels like SportsCenter, magazines and more wanted to talk with CM Punk about the issues he had with WWE. Punk got a better new contract with WWE and became WWE Champion later that year. He held the title 434 days until he lost it to The Rock at WWE Royal Rumble 2013.
How did professional Wrestling change?
Because of the “Pipe Bomb” promo, held by CM Punk, independent Wrestling shows and companies got way more attention than before. ROH got more success and got bigger over the past years. Also young talented Wrestlers got more opportunities to get to WWE ever since.
How did WWE change?
Because of this authentic and none scripted “Pipe Bomb” promo by Punk, WWE changed in many ways. The WWE Universe and WWE itself doesn’t care anymore so much about externalities, it’s more about talent. More independent Wrestlers, high flyers and Wrestlers based on technical skills got more chances to make it into the WWE.
WWE wants to get this momentum back when Punk held this promo. The company tries to make the promos as authentic as possible. They try to let it look like the Wrestlers get off script like John Cena and Roman Reigns last year and also a few months ago with Dolph Ziggler’s storyline.
CM Punk and his amazing “Pipe Bomb” promo was definitely one of the greatest in WWE history because it was not scripted. This promo changed the whole company in many good ways and gave young Wrestlers more chances and advantages to approve their talent .
